Years ago, 16-year-old Jamie Lockwood donned a surgical gown and hair net before entering the physics lab where she was spending the summer. While most of her classmates spent the school vacation lounging around, she was busy researching how different composites of chemicals affect MRI imaging at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Dr. William Duax - Science Mentor
After over 40 years of distinguished work in molecular biophysics and crystallography at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, Duax has found an unlikely ally in his quest to unravel the mysteries of life: teenagers. Duax is the founder and lead mentor of HWI’s high school program, which invites students to take a hands-on role in cutting edge research examining the structure and fabric of life on earth. Currently Duax is a candidate for the $10,000 Time Warner Cable Super Connector Search, a contest for those who encourage science and technology to young people in their communities.

On March 25 the second annual Passion in Progress Festival will be held at City Honors School. The festival is an extension of the Bezos-sponsored Aspen Scholars Institute, and has once again been made possible by the support of the Bezos Foundation. All high school students are invited to attend this free event.

Local researchers say a visit by Nobel Laureate Ada Yonath could have significant economic impact on the region – but only part of it will be immediate.
Yonath, who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2009, is a structural biology professor at the Weizmann Institute in Israel. She was only the fourth woman to be recognized and was the first in 40 years to receive chemistry’s highest international honor.

It would be easy, and yet wrong, to think of Sanjay Connare as immodest or brash.
True, the 22-year-old speaks with supreme self-confidence. But that assurance is the product of rising up after failure, being knocked down again, and trying once more. Mix in his recovery from a near-death experience when he was 21 and a person gets an idea of what makes Connare tick.

It's hard to pinpoint what most excites William Duax.
It could be the historic Amherst gatehouse that he and his wife Caroline are renovating. Wheelbarrow by wheelbarrow, they've cleared out more than four tons of rubble so far, he said.
Or maybe it's tracking the origin and evolution of the genome code, going back 14 billion years, at Buffalo's Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute.
